Neue Wache, Berlin
The Neue Wache is a neoclassical building built between 1816 and 1818 to plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, on the Unter den Linden boulevard, next to the Zeughaus and facing the Staatsoper. It was originally a guardhouse for the Royal Palace and a memorial to the Wars of Liberation. Since 1931 it has held the tomb of the unknown soldier and, since reunification, has been Germany's central memorial to the victims of war and tyranny since 1993. Inside, beneath a circular oculus open to the sky, stands the sculpture 'Mother with Her Dead Son' by Käthe Kollwitz, exposed to the elements. The building has a portico of unbased Doric columns and four corner risalits; the pediment bears a sculpture of Victory by Johann Gottfried Schadow and statues of generals by Christian Daniel Rauch. It was damaged during the Second World War and rebuilt in the 1950s; between 1960 and 1990 it served as a memorial to the victims of fascism and militarism in the GDR.
