Berlin Radio Tower
The Berlin Radio Tower, popularly known as der lange Lulatsch, is a 150 m steel tower built between 1924 and 1926 by Heinrich Straumer on the Messe Berlin exhibition grounds, in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. It is a protected monument and one of the city's best-known landmarks. Visitors ride a glass-fronted lift that travels at 4 m/s and takes 33 seconds to reach the observation platform at 126 m, from where there is a panoramic view of Berlin; there is also an outdoor staircase of more than 610 steps. At a height of 55 m is the Funkturm restaurant, with Jugendstil-style interiors and themed buffets, open on Fridays and Saturdays from 6pm to 10pm. The tower retains notable technical features, such as its square 20 x 20 m base and its support on porcelain insulators, and in 1935 the world's first regular television broadcast was transmitted from its antenna.
