Piazza della Signoria
An L-shaped square that has been Florence's political centre since the Middle Ages. It is dominated by the Palazzo Vecchio and holds Ammannati's Fountain of Neptune (1565), Giambologna's equestrian statue of Cosimo I and a copy of Michelangelo's David on the spot where the original stood until 1873. In 1498 Savonarola was burned here. Next to it are the Loggia dei Lanzi and the Uffizi.
