Opera and ballet theatre opened in 1860 to a design by Albert Cavos, in Theatre Square. It is home to one of the most famous ballet companies in the world, and works by Tchaikovsky such as "The Nutcracker" premiered here in 1892. Its blue velvet and gold auditorium has seen dancers such as Nijinsky or Pavlova. Since 2013 the new Mariinsky II has also operated beside it.
