Equestrian statue of Peter the Great in Senate Square, the work of the French sculptor Étienne Maurice Falconet, commissioned by Catherine II and unveiled in 1782. The tsar rides a rearing horse that tramples a serpent, on an enormous block of granite called the Thunder Stone. Its popular name comes from Pushkin's 1833 poem, and it is one of the symbols of Saint Petersburg.
